程班長台灣美食

Karen and I had a short stay in Hong Kong and didn’t have time to try all the great food I’ve heard so much about here. But we are so glad that we got the chance to taste the delicious beef noodles at the Taiwanese restaurant 程班長! Special thanks to Karen’s friend Nicola for taking us here! Loved it!!

The owner of 程班長 has been making beef noodles for over 25 years. He originally started out as a food stand in the night market in Taiwan and has won numerous awards. He has moved to Hong Kong a few years back and this restaurant in Hong Kong is now his only stand-alone restaurant.

We heard that they start making the beef broth from 5 in the morning every day. The beef bones are stewed and let simmer for over 10 hours with the addition of dried herbs and their secret ingredients.

We had this – 紅燒半筋半肉麵 (Beef noodle soup with shank + tendon). The shank and tendon are very tasty and stewed perfectly. The noodles are the chewy flat knife-cut noodles, which I love. Plenty of green onions and mustard greens is definitely a plus. The soup is very flavorful and not salty, good till the last drop!

Karen wanted some dessert but we were really too full to have any. To our surprise, just as we were about to ask for the check, the super friendly server brought us the dessert we had in mind! She heard that we are from Taiwan and are visiting from the States and served these to us on the house! We are super appreciative of their hospitality and friendliness.

I really enjoyed the Mung Bean Soup with Taro Balls and Sweet Potato Balls. So refreshing on a hot summer day!

We really enjoyed the true Taiwanese flavors here and loved the super friendly service. There are so many other Taiwanese traditional dishes that we’d love to try. Hope we’ll have a chance to come back in the future!
